Seeking Camera Advice

I have not lusted after a camera for a while.  However, since the advent of the Internet blog in my life, I have seen the wonders that a good camera with an even better photographer can create.

Suddenly it is not a snapshot, but a work of art.

Somehow, I think that a camera will help me document our life more artfully.

I just need a good camera.  Something for the amateur photographer with dreams of grandeur. Right now I have a Canon Power shot, a Sony Cybershot, and two Canon Rebels (film).  I would like to try a digital SLR (is that even right?).

Is anyone brave enough to give me advice?

I have a Nikon D80, and, frankly, it's too much camera for me. I think it will take me about three lifetimes to learn how to use it.

I have heard wonderful things about the Nikon D40--that for light balance (something I struggle with constantly) it's one of the best. So--that's my recommendation. If I had to buy a new camera right now, that's what I would get.

Doug has a Nikon and swears by it(I don't know which model). I like my little camera that I can stick in my purse/pocket, but for some occassions, I'm really glad we have the "big gun." Photography is one of Doug's many hobbies and knows much more than I do.

BTW, I've always had a Sony Cybershot, but a little elf told me I'm getting a Fuji for Christmas (Inkley's had a great deal!) Inkley's is a great store to go to. You can compare them all side by side, and they're very helpful.

I have been thinking of a Nikon D40. I have only had a Canon before. Are Canons and Nikons pretty comparable? Is one more intuitive or higher quality?

I thought of a Nikon because Wendy had one, and her pictures are gorgeous, and then I thought of a Canon because my cousin's wife, Minna has one, and her pictures take my breath away.

I told you wrong...doug swears by Minolta. I got confused because we were looking at a Nikon at Inkley's today.

I have no idea what is what when it comes to cameras, so I am really no help. Sorry!

We have a canon 20d and it has been a great camera for us. My only complaint is the pop-up flash does not do very well indoors. Most pop-up flashes are less than what you need. Canon has some great models out there...ours is now about 4 years old. It's not so much about the pixels anymore but more the size of the sensor. You can go to my brother Jeff's store in Sandy "Pixels" www.pixelsfoto.com to learn more about the camera world, plus I think if you buy a camera there, you get free classes to learn how to use it. It is worth the trip.
